100TH ANNIVERSARY NEWS AND EVENTS

A Century of Growth and Transformation

The passing of New Year celebrations means different things to each person. While many use this time to reflect on the past year and set goals for the year ahead, imagine looking back over a century—or, in my case, the past decade—to plan an unforgettable celebration. The 1st Port Credit Sea Scout Group is nearing one hundred years of Scouting in the community, and celebrating a 100th anniversary is an exceptional achievement, reflecting a century of resilience and commitment.

As noted on the Charter hanging in the Port Credit Yacht Club, the 1st Port Credit Sea Scout Group was established and chartered by the Boy Scouts Association of Canada as a Scout group on May 26, 1926.  Known originally as the 1st Port Credit Scout Group, our group holds the distinction of being the oldest Scout organization in Mississauga. It wasn't until 1936, when our group decided to change our designation from a scout group to a sea scout group to include more on-water activities, when our Group officially became the 1st Port Credit Sea Scouts.

As part of Scouts Canada, our Group has undergone substantial changes throughout the past one hundred years. Originally established as a boys-only organization, we became co-educational in 1998, welcoming girls and broadening our membership. In 2002, we restructured our youth sections to better support the diverse needs and interests of our members. In 2012, Scouts Canada’s introduction of the Child and Youth Safety Plan further reinforced our commitment to creating a secure environment for all participants.

Most recently, Scouts Canada has taken significant steps to ensure our program continues to reflect evolving societal values. Over the past eighteen months, input was gathered from young people, volunteers, parents, staff, and members of the broader community—both within and outside of Scouting. This collaboration of ideas and experiences has been the basis for Scouts Canada’s next strategic plan: “Bringing Communities Together.”

Although the original vision by Scouting founder, Lord Baeden Powell - Canadian youth making a meaningful contribution to creating a better world– remains strongly intact, we will shift to a more community-based program, bringing people together to create more opportunities for youth in their communities and helping them develop skills for life.

With the long-standing support of the Port Credit Yacht Club, our sponsor since 1939, the 100th Anniversary celebration of the 1st Port Credit Sea Scouts will be held on May 9th at PCYC. We cordially invite you to contribute stories and photographs highlighting the Sea Scouts’ engagement with PCYC over the past century by emailing Scouter Gail at info@1stportcreditseascouts.ca. Many Sea Scouts have learned to sail through PCYC’s youth, sailing programs and some went forward with careers in related fields. We are also seeking contact information for alumni of the 1st Port Credit Sea Scout Group.

Please stay tuned for more details regarding the celebration scheduled for May 9th, 2026. Additional information about anniversary activities in the community will be shared in the coming months, ensuring all members and supporters have the opportunity to participate in marking this historic milestone.
